The Café Project - 22 Jesus Lane (near Jesus College) - open in the evenings till late, and sometime also hosts events during the day - is a cosy volunteer-run, community café which also serves as a book-swapping library, art gallery, discussion and performance space in the heart of Cambridge. The Café is eclectic, improvised and open to everyone, both students and non-students. It’s a really welcoming place and they’re always looking for new volunteers!
The Rainbow Café - 9a Kings Parade (opposite King’s College) - open 10am-10pm - is unique in Cambridge, serving only totally vegetarian food, with vegan choices too. Everything is freshly made from natural, locally sourced ingredients. The menu is amazing, from the scrumptious cakes to the imaginative main courses!

MichaelhouseCafé- St Michael’s Church, Trinity Street (opposite Gonville & Caius) open 8am-5pm
- and Fare Shares Café - Emmanuel United Reformed Church, Trumpington Street (opposite Pembroke) open 10.30am-3pm - are friendly cafés which serve fairtrade tea, coffee, juices, cakes and snacks at very reasonable prices.
Origin8 - 62 St Andrew's Street (near Emmanuel) open 8am-6pm - is a deli-café which serves delicious brownies, sandwiches, soups and more, as well as fairtrade tea, coffee and juices. The downstairs seating area is large and airy - great for informal meetings.

Arjuna Wholefoods - 12 Mill Road - stocks the widest range of health foods in Cambridge.
Market Square - surely the best place in Cambridge to get cheap, local produce. It's just so much more fun than going to the supermarket!
Charity shops - Burleigh Street and Mill Road - including Oxfam, Cancer Research, the British Heart Foundation, the British Red Cross, the National Trust and Sally Ann’s - there’s loads to choose from so you can always be sure to find a great bargain!
The Good Shop - 17 Green Street (near Sidney Sussex) - stocks lots of fairtrade clothing, jewellery and homeware, including items from Howies and People Tree.
The Botanical Gardens -1 Brookside (five minutes walk from the train station) - the perfect place to get away from it all! The Cambridge University Botanical Gardens is a really peaceful place to relax, and has a collection of over 10,000 labelled plant species in a beautifully landscaped setting. Admission is free for students with a university card.
